the Krumple seek to create visually arresting theatre without borders, characterised by a strong element of surprise. The human is at the forefront of everything we do, each show walking a fine line between sensitivity and stupidity, as we strive to look through both ends of the telescope for what usually cannot be seen. All shows are devised collaboratively, and without anyone taking themselves (too) seriously. We often seek to laugh and to make others laugh, and to tell stories in a non linear fashion, with a leaning towards the poetic and the surreal.
Founded in 2013, the company is a collective of collaborating artists, performers, directors, magicians, puppeteers and musicians who met during their studies at École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris, France. After their training, Vincent Vernerie (FR), Jo Even Bjørke (NO), Oda Kirkebø Nyfløtt (NO), Jon Levin (US), Léna Rondé (FR) and David Tholander (DK) envisage a theatre company which centers its research on the creation of a theatrical language without borders, with a strong grounding in physical theatre. From this common desire, the Krumple is founded in Norway and soon after the Collectif Krumple, its French counterpart, is established in France.
The company has made eight shows to date and several of them have toured internationally:
Go to Sleep, Goddamnit! (2013) a mask based show which premiered in London, Do Not Feed the Trolls (2015) which explores the theme of internet trolling through the medium of a faux-conference, YŌKAI (2016) a contemporary tale of hope and despair for which the company received the First Prize at Plateaux du Groupe Gestes, DÉJÀ (2019) a show inspired by the graphic novel Here by Richard McGuire, Harrison (2021) a performance without a protagonist, SOLA (2021) a journey into the human’s worried mind, MEGAMEGA (2022) which invites to reflection upon new beginnings, and Pigeon Superstition (2023) which examines fanatically pecking pigeon’s similarities with humans in a digital age.
The company is currently working on Chimera, a new co-production with Nordland Visual Theatre set to premiere in 2025.
